Ask Dr. T: Do I Need a Chiropractor?

“Dr. T,

I have nagging low back pain. Just like everyone else, my diagnosis is in my L4/ L5/ S1 vertebrates.

The problem is, I do not know where to go. I have been to chiropractors, physical therapists, acupuncture, and massage.

I have had some results with everything but nothing has indefinitely solved the issue. Is there a reason I should be getting adjustments regularly?

I do not have a ton of time, love working out, and want to spend my time and money in a place that will actually be beneficial to my long-term health.

Any help?”

Dustin,

Before tackling this monster, we have to come to the conclusion that in situations like this, there is no right or wrong. What I mean is that I have seen everything you mentioned work, on many people, with many different issues.

If it works, you should do it.

What I do believe, however, is that the only true form of long term healing is by changing the way you move throughout the day.

Adjustments and manipulations are great, but often provide short-term relief. The adjustments will help your pelvis and straighten your spine. But, if you have dysfunctional movements, you will recreate the same problems as soon as you get off the table.

So yes, you should use every tool at your disposal to feel better to get to pain free. However, learning and practicing movement patterns that promote healthy joints and tissues is a critical component to long term health.
