This week on Barbell Business we’re answering a few questions that will help you increase your value and grow business. Starting from the top…
Is it possible to make a living in Crossfit without owning a gym?
Sure, although owning a gym is a great way to do it. You certainly have a lot more freedom. And you can surround yourself amazing people.
But if that doesn’t work, coaching is probably the next best option. There are always opportunities for sharp, hard working people that want to coach well. Study as hard as possible. Find a great gym, then go contribute value anyway you can. In time you’ll be right in the coaching mix, if you put in your time.
These are the traditional options. But let’s not forget, thanks to the modern internet you can do pretty much anything you want. Launch a site and offer your value to anyone in the world. Listen to what people want and then give it to them, in any way you can. Help them. Go work for a company like Wodify, Rogue Fitness or FitAid, etc, that is heavily rooted in health and fitness. The options are endless.
How can you increase your value in the gym?
A very easy thing to do is to sell. As a commissioned sales person you can help grow the business by bringing in new clients, and of course share in the benefits. The harder you work, the more you’ll make.
We suggest you ask for 10% of the total value of every contract sold. You won’t much of a salary at the rate, if any, but there will be a very strong incentive to get clients in the door, which is best for everybody involved. It’s hard to sell when you don’t have to.
Selling is only one way to add value. You could also just spend more time learning. Read books, listen to podcasts, and surf YouTube for great coaching videos. Go to any seminar you can. Gather ideas and bring them back to the gym. That’s incredibly valuable for everyone in the business. Just do yourself a favor and focus. The more niche and well-versed you can be a just a few things, the more valuable and influential you will be.
Ultimately you have to focus on how you can help the gym run better and make more money. If you can do that (You can!) then your value will definitely increase. In fact, you’ll probably end up making a great living. Especially if you can learn to market yourself well and project that value effectively.
You don’t need advanced marketing knowledge to get started, although that will be very useful later on. For now just go read, “How to win friends and influence people.” You’ll be glad you did.
A must read.
What are some creative ideas to make more money outside of coaching Crossfit classes?
Again, the very best thing you can do is to invest in yourself and become a content expert. Be very specific. Niche down. Start offering additional services in this specialty. Coach it in your gym. Teach it wherever you can. Video tape it or wrap the information up in an eBook. Sell it on your site. This is a great evergreen way to boost passive income. Also, it’s something that you can easily scale up with technology and teamwork.
Next week on part 2 we’ll tackle 4 more questions and offer you some useful ways to make more dough.
Stay tuned,

What kind of jobs are available with rogue and fit aid?
I guess you’d have to ask them. We’re not those companies. That said, they market, they manufacture, they have social media and accounting teams. Whatever it is you do, you can do it for a company that is involved in health and fitness. Beats working for a corporate machine that really isn’t interested in what you like.

Everybody I have talked to that has start using the Internet eventually asks the question: How can I make money online? And for most people, they never learn what they need to do in order to make a couple hundred to thousands of dollars online.
Everybody wants to make money online, but very few people know where to start. For most people it comes down to having to learn advanced skills that they never have time to master, resulting in the feeling of helplessness about making money online.
Luckily for me, I found an easy way around that about a year ago. Instead of trying to learn crazy web languages or graphic design, I started search for nontechnical ways to make money online. This led me to taking paid surveys online.
One of the great things about the Internet is that it can connect people and companies almost instantly, and companies have found out about it. Companies have found that they can receive almost instant feedback about their products, services, or ad campaigns through the Internet. This is called market research, and before it used to take companies hundreds of thousands of dollars and many months to find average and sometimes outdated data.
Now, companies have a direct and almost instant link to people that use their products, and will pay people to help them speed up their market research. When I found out about it, I was a little skeptical, but I decided to try my hand at it anyway.
What I found was that I could make decent money just by filling out online surveys for an hour or so, everyday. It was surprisingly easy since I could do them while chatting on Facebook or after my kids went to bed, so I figured I would give it a month and see how much I could earn. At the end of the month, I was so excited when my first check came in the mail for $638.28!
After a few months, I built up a reputation so that survey companies would give me even higher paying surveys, giving me even more money. Overall it has been a very smart choice that fits into my lifestyle, and hasn’t required me to learn anything advanced computer skills. If you are trying to make some extra money, give online surveys a try.
So how does it work?
1. Find a website that has a large survey database. I have tried a few, but personally, I like Surveys At Home because they have prescreened the survey websites to find the ones that pay the best.
2. Sign up with a few sites, 3-5 to start then add more to receive more surveys
3. Start taking surveys, simply fill out accurate information. They usually take 10-20 minutes per survey.
4. Cash out and receive your payment either with PayPal or by mail.
Best or all, you don’t need to spend any money, there is no risk or scams, and the sites are free to join. If you are looking to earn some extra income, surveys seem to be one of the best ways to go.
